Microchips

Legally, all dogs and cats in Portugal must be electronically identified and registered between 3 and 6 months of age. 

​

Identification can only be carried out by a veterinarian, through the subcutaneous application of the microchip on the left side of the neck. 

​

The microchip has a unique alphanumeric code that is registered together with the owner's data in the Companion Animal Information System (SIAC).

​

The microchips are the size of a grain of rice and are applied only once throughout the animal's life, through an injection.

Traveling

Traveling with pets, especially outside Portugal, requires specific requirements.

​

Home service for travel preparation includes:​

​

  • Issuance of European pet passport.

  • Rabies antibody titre analysis issued by EU approved laboratory. 

  • Issuance of a veterinary certificate (MOD1452).

  • Issuance of the international veterinary certificate by the DGAV.
